The Rubik's Cube

The Rubik's Cube is a 3D combination puzzle invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Originally called the Magic Cube.

Slide 2

There Are Over 43 Quintillion Combinations

When you twist the cube, there are exactly 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible ways to mix it up. To picture just how large that number is, if you had one cube for every possible combination and lined them up, they could cover the entire surface of the Earth in thick, multiple layers!

The Inventor Couldn't Solve It Right Away

Even though Ernő Rubik invented the puzzle, he did not know the solution when he first built his prototype. It took him over a month of hard work and thinking to figure out how to put it back into a solved state.

People Speed-Solve It in Seconds

There is a whole hobby and sport dedicated to solving the cube as fast as possible, called "speedcubing". The fastest humans solve a 3x3 Rubik's Cube in under 3 seconds! You can learn more about official competitions and global records on the World Cube Association website.
