Gear Cube

A puzzle featuring internal gear mechanisms that cause the edge and corner pieces to rotate at different ratios as you turn the faces.

Before starting, make sure you know the basic move notation:

Step 1 — Corners

Step 2 — Edges

The cube has 3 edge slices. Identify any slice where opposite edges need to swap positions (top two swap with each other, and bottom two swap with each other).

  • Hold the cube so the two swapping top edges face you.
  • Algorithm 1 (Swap Edges): R2 U R2 U

  • Repeat this algorithm on any other ring where edges are in the wrong slots.
  • Step 3 — Solve the Cube

After placing all edge pieces in their correct slots, some edge gears may sit misaligned at an angle (making the puzzle lose its flat, cubic shape).

  • Flatten the Cube (Align Gear Teeth)
  • Turn a face 4 to 6 times (180° turns) until the gear teeth engage properly and the face becomes flat and smooth.

Repeat on the other axes until all faces form a flat cube shape again.

All pieces are in their correct locations, but some edge gears may still be flipped/rotated upside down.

  • Unflip/Rotate the Gear Edges
  • Hold the cube facing a side where all 4 edge gears need to be flipped.

    Algorithm 2 (Unflip Edges): R U R U R U
